We didn’t plan on walking down the longest sidewalk in Hays County tonight, but we left the house much too late for the trail. That sidewalk is almost 3 miles long, and piggybacks the 45SW toll road. We really enjoyed the landscape, though, at dusk, the overcast sky stirring above. The cedar, live oaks, and holly bushes soaked the horizon like an inkspill on a paper’s edge. In fact, it got so dark, we felt like we were walking along a pier by the harbor, the power lines and telephone poles towering beside us like ships’ masts.

We were surprised by the drizzle and rain, and walked back to our car tucked under our umbrella in the moonlight, a single-engine plane buzzing over our heads, lights flashing in the mist.
